My Great Great Grandfather was Johann Gigowski but he was born in 1828 in Danzig as far as we know. I do know that some of the family stayed in Poland and I am trying to find any of them. Johann had 3 brothers Jacob, Michael, Joseph and a sister Antonia.

My Great Great Grandfather was Johann Gigowski, but he was born in 1828 in Danzig, I believe. Came to America in 1882, lived in Michigan the rest of his life. Some of his siblings stayed in Poland though.

Hallo Jim,
at Danzig in 1817 there is no Gigowski and also not in 1858.But at these adressbooks there are only workmen, teachers, traders and so on, no laborer. Perhaps you mean the county of Danzig?
At adressbook of 1897 there is only Eva Gigowski born Okzey - widow -Hintere Schidlitz 222,
in 1898: Valentin Gigowski - Schlosser (fitter) - Mausegasse 12
Here you can find the Gigowski , who emigrate to USA 1873 ( Jacob):
http://www.castlegarden.org/search_02.php?m_ship=&po_port=&p_first_name=&p_last_name=Gigowski&o_occ=&co_country=&province=&town=&m_arr_date_start=1820&m_arr_date_end=1913&submit.x=86&submit.y=14

Thank you for the information and I will check the website you gave me. What is the country of Danzig? Sorry I did not know that. Eva was married to Jacob, so that is interesting that she was a widow in 1897. Again thank you for your help. Regards and Greetings Jim

Hello Jim,

the county of Danzig is the area outside the town. In german is the name "Landkreis Danzig" and later "Landkreis Danziger Höhe" and "Landkreis Danziger Niederung". "Danziger Höhe" means "Danzig altitute" the area in the south of Danzig. "Danzig Niederung" means "Danzig marsh" in the east.

Greetings

Uwe

Einfach super !!!
Liebe Grüße
Jutta
